I Tried Selling Digital Products for 4 Months — Here’s What Actually Worked ( and where to sell your digital products)

Curious where to sell digital products that actually make money? Learn how I made £16K in just 4 months and discover the platforms, tools, and lessons that fast-tracked my success.

If you’ve been thinking about diving into the world of digital products but you’re still sitting on the fence, let me give you the real talk I wish I had at the start. Over four months, I made £16,000 selling digital products—and while that sounds exciting (and it is), what people don’t tell you is everything it took to get there.

We’re talkin’ mindset struggles, failed templates, AI disasters, and moments where I nearly quit. But you’re not gonna have to go through it blindly, because I’m laying it all out. Grab your hot water bottle, get cozy, and let’s break down where to sell digital products, what actually works, and what to avoid so you can succeed way faster.

1. Mindset First – You have to believe you CAN make money

Let’s start at the top. If you’ve grown up with a scarcity mindset, learning to accept money is half the battle. I’m not woo-woo—I’m a Capricorn, okay? I believe in facts. And one fact I learned is that if you don’t think you can make money online, you won’t. Shifting your mindset is step one in becoming a digital product creator.

2. Finding Your Niche – You’re Already Qualified!

Still stuck trying to figure out your niche? Here’s a secret: You don’t have to be an expert. You just need to pick something you’ve overcome—a challenge, a process, a transformation—and teach others how you did it. That’s it.

Your niche doesn’t have to be flashy. It just needs to fall into one of these three buckets:

  • Health

  • Wealth

  • Relationships

3. Passion is Optional — Just Get Started

Contrary to what the gurus say, you don’t have to be passionate about your first product. Start where you have knowledge and build from there. Your digital product journey will evolve—so don’t wait for lightning to strike. Validate your idea first and worry about passion later.

4. Simple Sells — Stop Overcomplicating It

You don’t need a 30-module course. You don’t need 200 Canva templates. You need something useful and simple. People are more likely to buy a 5-page ebook or a 15-minute tutorial that solves one specific problem than a monster course they’ll never finish.

Start fast. Start small. You’ll learn as you go.

5. AI is a Tool, Not a Creator

Let me be blunt: Don’t use AI to create your entire product. It can help you brainstorm ideas or structure your ebook, but please don’t copy-paste your way through. Your audience can tell.

If you want to use AI smartly, here are ChatGPT prompts for creating digital products that’ll help you enhance—not replace—your creativity.

6. You Don’t Need a Website to Start Selling Digital Products

Seriously, stop stressing about building a fancy site. I wasted hundreds of pounds on mine—and never made a sale from it.

Instead, try platforms like:

  • Beacons – Quick to set up, mobile-friendly, lets you host products

  • Google Docs – Yes, really. You can create a product, link a checkout, and go live

  • Canva – Great for creating lead magnets or templates fast

Fast beats fancy every time. Just make sure your checkout link works and loads fast!

7.  Grow Your Email List (This Is Where the Real Money Is)

Listen up: if you’re not building an email list, you’re leaving money on the table. A lead magnet—like a checklist or mini ebook—is the easiest way to start growing that list from day one.

Instagram but skipping your weekly emails—it’s time to rethink your strategy.

💌 My Favorite Email Tool: Flodesk

8. Where to Sell Digital Products (Free & Paid Options That Actually Work)

So, where should you sell? Here are a few options—both free and low-cost:

✅ Where to Sell Digital Products for Free

  • Gumroad – No upfront fees

  • Payhip – Easy to use with free pricing tiers

  • [Google Docs + Stripe/PayPal] – Literally link a checkout button to a doc

  • Beacons – Free plans available, with storefront tools

✅ Other platforms to try

  • Etsy – Still works great with the right strategy (here’s how)

  • Notion – Use it to sell planners, templates, or use it for back-end ops

Pensight – A user-friendly platform where you can sell digital products, offer coaching, or create bundles all from one link

And if you’re thinking about selling PLR digital products (Private Label Rights), make sure you personalize them. Slapping your name on a generic ebook doesn’t build trust—but customizing them can save time while still giving value.

9. You Don’t Need a Huge Audience to Make Sales

Let me shout this: followers ≠ sales.

I see more conversions from platforms like Pinterest and YouTube (hello evergreen content!) than I do from Instagram. If you’re not consistent on Instagram, that’s okay. Try faceless content if showing up on camera isn’t your jam – check this post for my my faceless content strategy guide and top 10 tip

10. It Takes 7-12 Touchpoints to Convert

Someone has to see you 7–12 times before buying. That means showing up consistently across platforms, repurposing content, and staying top-of-mind.

✨ Want help doing that? This blog right here is a perfect start.

📚 Lessons 11–17 (Summarized So You Can Keep Moving Forward Fast)

Now look—I could keep you here all day breaking down every single one of these lessons, but I know you’re busy building your dream. So I’ve summarized lessons 11 through 17 below to keep this post skimmable and actionable.

Alright, let’s run through those final lessons:

11. People need 7–12 touchpoints before they buy.

So don’t stop after posting twice. Repurpose your content, show up across platforms, and build trust through consistency.

12. Create urgency without lying.

Skip the fake countdowns and shady discounts. Integrity builds long-term relationships—and sales.

13. Look like a legit business.

Use a custom domain email and register your biz if you can. Professionalism sets the tone, even if this is just your side hustle right now.

14. Build your brand early.

Pick your name, colors, and logo now—so you grow something that feels consistent and recognizable as you scale.

15. Faceless marketing can work (with strategy).

You don’t have to show your face, but you do need a system. I share more in this blog about faceless content.

16. Get your systems together from day one.

Use tools like Notion, Google Drive, or Trello to stay organized and stop wasting time searching for stuff.

17. Journal your lessons.

Your insights are gold. Capture them, revisit them, and even turn them into future products. It’s one of the most underrated growth tools out there.
